Germany is located in the heart of Europe and has borders with nine other countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland.  The German Federal Republic comprises of 16 states.  Germany has the largest population in the EU with 82.5million inhabitants.  88% of the population live in urban areas; Germany's largest cities are Berlin (3.4million inhabitants), Hamburg (1.7m), Munich (1.2m), Colgne (1m) and Frankfurt/Main (0.6m). 

Germany's National Day is 3 October (Day of German Unity)

The President of Germany is Joachim Gauck.  The German Chancellor (Head of Government) is Dr Angela Merkel.
