07.06.2013 EU Ambassadors Luncheon  

On Friday, 7 June 2013, Ambassador Charles Sheehan hosted a working luncheon for the heads of EU member–state Embassies in Athens.

Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos was the guest of honour and Deputy Foreign Minister, Dimitris Kourkoulas was also in attendance.

Minister Avramopoulos briefed the Ambassadors on a range of Greek foreign policy issues and recent diplomatic initiatives of the Greek government.  Furthermore, the Minister congratulated Ambassador Sheehan on the work done by the Irish Presidency and presented the priorities of the Greek 2014 EU Presidency.

04.06.2013 Irish – Greek Forum

On Tuesday 4 June 2013, the Greek-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce organized an Irish – Greek Forum titled “Ways out of the crisis – The Irish Example” at the Ledra Marriott Hotel in Athens.

Speakers at the Forum included the Greek Minister of Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Kostis Chatzidakis, Ambassador Charles Sheehan, the German Ambassador in Greece, Wolfgang Dold and representatives of the Greek and Irish commercial, economic and finance sector.

 

Ambassador Sheehan thanked the organizers of the Forum for their initiative and gave a warm welcome to the visitors from Ireland, Mr. Ralf Lissek, CEO of the German-Irish Chamber, Mr. Jack Golden, Board of Director HR of CRH, Liam Ryan, CEO SAP Ireland and Werner Schawnberg, CEO WGZ Bank Ireland.

In his presentation, (PDF 1303kb)  Ambassador Sheehan highlighted the recent Irish experience with key points focusing on Ireland’s Public Finances under the EU/IMF Programme, Ireland’s Third Successive Year of Growth ,  Bank restructuring and  Ireland’s Strong Growth Potential and Prospects.

Refreshments and beverages offered during the event included Guinness Stout Beer and Irish coffee!

  

May 2013

26.05.2013 - LAASA International Food Festival benefitting the SOS Children’s Villages    

 

The Irish Embassy participated in the  LAASA – International Food Festival at the SOS Children’s’ Village in Vari with an Irish stall which showcased and sold traditional culinary delights from Ireland.  All the proceeds raised by the 37 participating Embassies were donated to the SOS Children’s Village in Vari which provides a family environment for children who do not have parents to provide for them.  Mrs. Alice Sheehan together with her daughter Tanya welcomed visitors to our stall.

 

We were delighted that Greek Minister of Tourism, Ms.  Olga Kefalogianni, visited the Irish stall where Mrs. Alice Sheehan introduced her to tasty Irish delicacies!

 

23.05.2013 Taoiseach Enda Kenny ‘s T.D.  Official Visit to Athens.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s T.D.  visit to Athens on 23 May 2013 included a meeting with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras at the Maximos Mansion, (Μέγαρο Μαξίμου) the official seat of the Prime Minister of Greece, a joint press conference following their meeting and a  visit  to The Acropolis Museum where PM Samaras also hosted an official luncheon  in honour of the Taoiseach.

 

Prior to the meeting with PM Antonis Samaras, Taoiseach Enda Kenny T.D.  attended a Business Round Table at the Irish Embassy which was hosted by Ambassador Charles Sheehan and attended by representatives of various Greek business sectors.

10.04.2013 EU Ambassadors Luncheon

 

On Wednesday, 10 April, 2013 Ambassador Charles Sheehan hosted a working luncheon for the heads of EU member–state Embassies in Athens.

Minister of Economy, Professor Yannis Stournaras was the guest of honour, who despite being in the midst of negotiations with the troika, accepted Ambassador Sheehan’s invitation to present the EU Ambassadors with data and prospects of the Greek economy.

During the luncheon, there was extensive discussion about the Greek government’s negotiations with the heads of the troika, the developments in the banking sector, the course of the privatization program as well as the crisis in Cyprus, in view of the informal ECOFIN in Ireland on 12 April, 2013.

27.03.2013 -  Destination Ireland!

On Wednesday, March 27th, Versus Travel, in cooperation with the Irish Embassy, hosted a promotional event at the Versus Travel Club location in Athens showcasing Ireland as a great tourist destination!

About 200 Club members turned out for the occasion and enjoyed Tourism Ireland’s short documentary film, presentations, Irish music. . . .

 

and lots of Irish whiskey and tasty nibbles.

 

The evening's raffle prize, Lily O'Briens handmade chocolates, made for a delicious sweet ending to an informative and fun Irish evening!

20.03.2013 – EU Ambassadors Luncheon

On Wednesday, 20 March 2013, Ambassador Charles Sheehan hosted a working luncheon for the heads of EU member-state Embassies in Athens.  

Deputy Foreign Minister, Dimitris Kourkoulas was the guest of honour.

During the luncheon developments within the EU as well as many issues relating to the management of the economic crisis in the Euro Zone were discussed.  Deputy Foreign Minister Kourkoulas also informed the Ambassadors about the EU preparations for the Greek Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2014.

 

 

14.03.2013 - St. Patrick’s Day Reception

On the occasion of St. Patricks Day, Ambassador Charles Sheehan and Mrs. Alice Sheehan hosted a reception at the Residence.

Guests enjoyed scrumptious Irish delicacies and beverages as well as great sounding Irish music and dancing.

On March 7, Ambassador Charles Sheehan hosted the opening reception of TheNon Zero Sum Art Games, a part of Culture Ireland’s ‘Culture Connects International Programme, marking Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

THE NON ZERO SUM ART GAMES IN ATHENS FROM 7MARCH – 24 MARCH 2013

 

 

 

The Non Zero Sum Art Games is a program of exhibitions and performances focusing on the power that art and people have to transform the socio/political psyche of the public in 3 European cities; Dublin, Lisbon and Athens, all whom have recently been hit by financial crisis. Two groups of Irish artists will travel to Athens and Lisbon to work under financial and time restrictions, as well as rules imposed by the curators.

The Non Zero Sum Art Games will open on March 7th with a live video link between all venues.

Here in Athens join us at the metamatic:taf on 5 Normanou Street, 105 55 Athens at 20.30 to meet the artists and to see their creations.

The exhibition will features works by 5 Irish artists; Andrew Carson, Adam Gibney, Samantha McGahon, Matthew Nevin and Ciara Scanlan and 5 Greek artists: George Gyzis, Kyriakos Tsiftsopoulos, Maria Tzanakou, Panos Profitis and Stefanos Athanatos.

February 28, 2013 – Traditional Pitta Cutting Reception at the Embassy

On February 28th H.E. Ambassador Charles Sheehan hosted the traditional Pitta cutting reception for the members and friends of The Hellenic Irish Business Association (HIBA) at the Irish Embassy in Athens.

February 15, 2013 – Traditional Irish Songs at The Acropolis Museum

On Friday, 15 February 2013 the Musical Evenings series programme at The Acropolis Museum in Athens showcased Traditional Irish Songs performed by Labri Giotto (Labrini Gioti - piano/vocal) and George Tsimbouksis (guitar), in both Irish and English addressing themes of love, foreign lands, pastoral life and happiness!  

                                            

This musical event was sponsored by the Embassy of Ireland in Greece, on the occasion of the Irish eu2013 Presidency.

January 10, 2013 - Presentation of the Programme and the Priorities of the Irish eu2013 Presidency by H.E. Ambassador Charles Sheehan

                                       

On Thursday, January 10,  2013  Ambassador Charles Sheehan presented the Presidency Programme and the Priorities of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union to guests and the media at the premises of the European Parliament Office in Athens with an excellent turnout from all major Greek Media.  

    H.E. the Ambassador of Cyprus, Mr. Joseph Joseph presenting the traditional discus(which has become a symbol of the  EU Presidencies in Athens) to H.E. the Ambassador of Ireland, Mr. Charles Sheehan during the launch of the Programme and Priorities of the Irish eu2013 Presidency.
